MATHABLE

I — THE GAME

MATHABLE is a game based upon mathematical equations which must be formed on the playing board.

To do this, the players make use of a playing board with normal squares, squares with a restriction (pink squares) and squares with an award (blue-grey squares marked 2X, and white squares marked 3X), and of 126 numbered tokens. The player who at the end of the game has obtained most points is proclaimed winner.

III — GETTING READY

After opening the board, each player takes a token holder which he places in front of him, so that no other player can see the tokens he will put on the holder later on in the game.

The tokens are placed face-down on the table and are mixed well.

Each player takes and keeps a token to see who is to start. The player with the highest number takes 6 more tokens to make a total of 7. Moving clockwise, the other players do the same.

IV — RULES OF THE GAME

1) The mathematical equation

A mathematical equation is completed by adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing two adjacent numbers putting a token with the result on the next empty square, be it to the right or left, below or above the two original tokens. Equations may be made horizontally or vertically, but never diagonally.

2) Value of the Tokens/Points.

Each token has a point value equal to the number on the token.

3) Restriction Squares

The pink squares are marked with an addition, subtraction, multiplication or division sign, and oblige the player to form an equation of that particular nature, should he wish to occupy said square.

4) Restriction Bonus.

If a player places a token on a pink restriction square, he may at that moment take an extra token if he so wishes. This decision may not be postponed.

5) Bonus for multiple equations.

If a token, when being placed, comp!etes more than one equation, and the player is aware of this, the points are gained for each equation completed.

6) Squares with an Award.

A grey square marked 2X doubles the amount of points of the token on that square, a white square marked 3X triples the amount of points.

7) Total Score.

The total amount of points earned per turn is the total sum of the value of all tokens placed in that turn (don’t forget bonusses and awards!).

8) Extra Bonus.

If a player manages to place all the tokens he has on his holder in one turn, he earns an extra bonus of 50 points. Note: if a player starts his turn with less than 7 tokens on his holder (this can happen towards the end of the game), this bonus does not apply.

9) Replacing the Tokens.

At the end of his turn, each player takes tokens randomly from the pile, to bring the amount on his holder back to 7.

V — ADDITIONAL REMARKS.

1) A player may make use of his turn to exchange one or more tokens on his holder for new ones. He must put the tokens face-down on the table, take the same amount he has discarded back from the pile, and mix the discarded tokens well with the ones in the pile. To play, he must await his next turn.

2) After having placed a token on the board, one may not take it back.

3) A player may correct an opposing player’s mistake, as long as he does so before the next player has taken his turn. If a player makes a mistake, he takes back the token and loses his turn, counting only the number of points scored before the mistake was made.

4) The game continues until there are no tokens left in the pile, and one of the players has used up all the tokens on his holder, or until no more equations can be made.

At the end of the game, each player deducts the value of the tokens still on his holder from the total amount of points accumulated during the game.

5) Advice: After having read the Rules of the Game and Additional Remarks, but before playing your first game, we advise you to play the game example which follows, following the instructions step by step.

VI — GAME EXAMPLE

The two players in this example, have the following tokens:

Player 1: 1, 8, 2, 12, 16, 42, 17
Player 2: 7, 6, 8, 21, 3, 7, 4

A — FIRST PLAYER’S TURN:

1. He places his first token.

a. The player may choose one of the four mathematical operations using the numbers 1 to 4 printed in the center of the playing board (see Rules of the Game, point 1).

b. This player, who has a token number 12 on his holder, chooses to multiply the numbers 3 and 4. He may place token number 12 either to the left of the 3 or to the right of the 4. He chooses to place it at the right. (DO SO!)

c. Since the equation is correct, the player earns 12 points (see Rules of the Game, point 2).

2. He places his second token:

a. Since he has an 8, he decides to multiply 2 x 4, and chooses to place the result above the 2. (DO SO!)

b. The player has earned 8 points.

3. He places his third token:

a. He takes the 2 from the holder, subtracts 1 from 3 and places the 2 below the 3. He could also place the 2 above the 1, but chooses not to do so. (DO SO!)

b. The player adds 2 points to his total.

4. He places his fourth token:

a. The player subtracts 1 from 2 and places token 1 left of the 1 already on the board. (DO SO!)

b. The player has earned 1 point.

5. He places his fifth token:

a. At this point, the square to the right of the square occupied by 12 is pink, marked with a “+“ sign, which obliges the player to add the 12 and the adjacent 4, if he wishes to make use of this pink square (see Rules of the Game, point 3). The player takes token 16 from his holder and places it on the pink square, thus fulfilling the obligation of making an equation of addition. (DO SO!)

b. This gives him the right to take another token from the pile, if he so wishes (see Rules of the Game, point 4). He does so, and receives token 11.

c. The player adds 16 points to his score.

6. The player cannot place another token, and so his turn is over.

a. He totals all points earned in this turn, and finds his total score is 39 (see Rules of the Game, point 7).

b. He has only 3 tokens left on his holder, so he must take 4 new ones to reach 7 (see Rules of the Game, point 9). (DO SO!)

B — SECOND PLAYER’S TURN

(normally the second player sits to the left of the first).

1. He places his first token:

a. The player decides to add 3 and 4, since he has a 7 on his holder. He places the token to the left of the 3. (DO SO!)

b. He receives 7 points.

2. He places his second token:

a. Subtracting 1 from 7 gives him a total of 6. He places the token 6 under the 7 (he could also have placed it above the 1). (DO SO!)

b. He adds 6 points to his total.

3. He places his third token:

a. The player decides to add 6 and 2, totalling 8.

b. He has two possibilities:
— Placing the 8 to the left of the 6, giving him 8 points.
— Placing the 8 to the right of the 2, and thus profiting from the Bonus for Multiple Equations, since the vertical 2 x 4 also gives 8 (see Rules of the Game, point 5).

c. The player opts for choice number 2, twice adding 8 points (a total of 16) to his score. (DO SO!)

d. Remark: If the two tokens above this square do not complete the equation, the player may still place a token there, though only counting 8 points for the sum.

4. He places his fourth token:

a. This time he uses token 4, adding 3 and 1. He places the loken above the 1. (DO SO!)

b. He has earned 4 points.

5. He places his fifth token:

a. To make use of token 3 he divides 6 by 2. The result 3 is placed next to the 6. (DO SO!)

b. He adds 3 points.

6. He places his sixth token:

a. Multiplying 7 by 3 totals 21. This token is placed to the left of the 7. (DO SO!).

b. He adds 21 points.

c. Since in this case only multiplication was allowed, due to the presence of a restriction square, and since the player fulfilled this obligation, he may now take an extra token (see Rules of the Game, point 4).

However, he chooses not to, afraid he may pick a token he will be unable to use.

a. He places the 7 below the 3, since 21 / 3 = 7

b. He cannot place the token above the 21, since a restriction square does not allow him to divide.

c. Placing the 7 below the 3, he lands on an award square (2X), which doubles the amount of points earned (see Rules of the Game, point 6, and DO SO!).

d. The player has managed to get rid of all 7 tokens in one turn, and so his turn comes to an end.

e. He totals the amount of points earned (71) and adds the “Extra Bonus” of 50 points (see Rules of the Game, point 8), which gives him a grand total of 121 points for this turn.

C — IT IS AGAIN THE FIRST PLAYER’S TURN.

This player could start by placing token 42, however we have now learned how the game is played.

Put all tokens back in the pile, face-down, and mix them well.

We can now start a real game, remembering that every token placed must give a correct result.
