AGES: 4 to 7 Years PLAYERS: 2 - 4 Players
Full colour gameboard, 6 Awake Grump pieces; 5 Special Harps (purple); 5 Sapphire Jewels (blue); 5 Golden Eggs (yellow); 5 Magic Cherries (red); 1 die; 4 movers.
Play this game together not against each other. The Mean Old Grump has taken all the village treasures up to the Beanstalk and is fast asleep. The villagers are climbing up the Beanstalk to bring the treasures home. If they can do that before the Grump wakes up, they are successful. If the Grump wakes up, the treasures are grabbed back and the villagers must go home to try again.
1. Put all of the Sapphire Jewels in the Grump’s treasure chest at the top of the beanstalk. Put all of the Golden Eggs with the Grump’s goose. Put all of the Magic Cherries in the Grump’s basket. Put all of the Special Harps on the Grump’s harp space. Near the Sleeping Grump, but off the gameboard, spread out the Awake pieces.
2. Each player picks a mover to use and places it in a house at the bottom of the beanstalk.
3. In turn, players roil the die and move the corresponding number of spaces up the beanstalk. If you land on the Grump’s face, this means the Grump is starting to wake up. One Awake piece is put on top of the Sleeping Grump each time the Grump’s face is landed on. We suggest starting with feet, then hands, then the head and last what the Grump shouts. When this last piece is in place, the Grump is completely awake and takes back all of the treasures. The game is over and players go home and try again.
4. If you land on the Jewels (blue space) take 1 Jewel token from the pile at the top. If you land on the Cherries (red space), take 1 Cherry token. If you land on a Cloud, this is just a safe resting place. Wait there until your next turn. If you land on the Golden Eggs (yellow space), take 1 Golden Egg token. You can keep the treasures in your own house or in front of you.
5. If you land on a Harp (purple space), you can take 1 Special Harp token. This Harp can be used at any time to put the Grump back to sleep. The Grump likes sweet music. Players put the Harps back on to the Harp pile so they can take away an Awake piece. One Harp allows you to take away one Awake piece. Using a Harp is part of your turn; you still get to roll the die and move.
6. When a player makes it all the way into the clouds where the treasures are, the player can pick any 1 of the 4 kinds of items. You don’t have to roll the exact number to get to the top. On your next turn you must start back down. You can pick which path to begin your downward climb on. To get home, you don’t need to roll an exact number either.
7. When every player has returned home and has 1 Sapphire Jewel, 1 Magic Cherry, and 1 Golden Egg, the game is won. (For a harder game, some players like to play that each player must also have 1 Harp.) At least 1 of each of the treasures must be left behind for the Grump to enjoy. Being kind might change the mean old Grump. If someone gets home before the others, this person stays in the game taking a regular turn with the die, but gives the number rolled to another player.
8. Special Rule #1; At any time, players may give each other any of the treasures.
9. Special Rule #2; Sometimes everyone gets home but not everyone has enough treasures to win the game. Have a village meeting and decide to send one person up the beanstalk as far as necessary to get whatever treasure(s) are needed to win and then all the way down to home again. If players have trouble deciding who should go up, each player rolls the die. Whoever rolls the lowest number is sent up the beanstalk. Everyone takes a turn rolling the die and uses the numbers to move the one person up and then down the beanstalk. All the rules for landing on spaces apply as before. Be careful not to wake the Grump! Good luck getting your treasures back. Don’t forget to leave some behind for Grump.
