Pound Puppies

Lovable, Huggable
RUNAWAY-ROUNDUP GAME

Golden, 1986

OBJECT

To be the first player to collect all four puppies pictured on his/her Pound Card.

BEFORE PLAY

Each player selects a Pound Card and holds it in his hand. Any leftover Pound Cards are placed out of play.

The deck of cards is then shuffled and four cards are dealt facedown to each player. Each player inserts the cards he has received into the slots on his Pound Card, matching up any puppies that are alike. Cards that do not match any puppies on a player’s card can be placed at random in the vacant slots. (See Diagram 1.) Players do not show their cards to each other.

The remaining cards are placed facedown to form a draw pile. One card is placed FACEDOWN to form a discard pile.

Players decide who will play first; play will then pass to the left.

PLAY

Each player, in turn, draws a card from the draw OR discard pile.

• If that card matches one of the puppies on his Pound Card, the player can keep the card, inserting it in the appropriate slot in the the Pound Card. He then discards one of the other cards from his hand facedown on the discard pile. If a player draws a duplicate of a card he already holds in his hand, he may discard the duplicate.

• If the card a player draws does not match a puppy on his Pound Card, the player may discard that or any other card from his hand facedown on the discard pile.

• If a player draws a Dogcatcher Card he may immediately place it faceup in a third pile next to the discard pile. He may then draw a card from any opponent’s hand. (He may not look at any opponent’s hand before drawing a card.) The player must then choose one card from his own hand and give it to the opponent in return. Both players should have four cards in their hands after the exchange.

REMEMBER: Each player draws a card at the start of his turn from the draw or discard pile, then discards a card facedown at the end of his turn. If all the cards in the draw pile have been used before the game is won, the discard pile is shuftled and turned facedown to form a new draw pile.

After each turn, play passes to the left.

The first player to collect the four puppies pictured on his Pound Card wins the game.

PLAY VARIATION

Young children may choose to play the game by placing the Pound Cards on the table, faceup. Players hold their cards in their hands and continue to play as described above, but they DO NOT insert cards into the slots on the Pound Cards until they have collected all four matches, thereby winning the game.
