With a clever use of backgammon pieces, Colonel Moran managed to hypnotize Sir Hyman, and the latter
was brought to the scene of the crime at the Thomson mansion.
Knowing that even under hypnosis Sir Hyman would not actually kill anyone. Moriarty arranged for
his own minions to murder the three persons at the Thomson mansion, and then Moriarty had pictures
taken, which he used in the kinetoscope, of Sir Hyman standing over the dead bodies.
Moriarty hoped to use these pictures as a means of blackmail to extort compliance from Sir Hyman.
Knowing that Scotland Yard’s intensive security at the Museum’s exhibit this weekend would make it
extremely difficult for an outsider to get close to the Ziegfield necklace, Moriarty hoped to force
